A father. A husband. An artist. An innovator. A fashion photographer. Nick Knight has been challenging the dimensions of beauty since he begun being a photographer with a difference in the 80s.
Since I began collecting British Vogue at the age of fifteen, Knight’s work stood out to me. I distinctly remember a shoot with Gemma Ward. The finished products always have a beautiful imaginative spin to presenting fashion. And this shoot was no exception.
I studied photography for A level and at any opportunity would reference or propose Nick Knight as inspiration and motivation. At this point I began to research more about this magnificent man and thoroughly enjoyed what I learnt.
My favourite image is entitled ‘Jil Sander’ which was shot in 1992. The dress is extravagant and enrapturing. But it is more than a girl in a dress. There is a world of hope, elegance and divinity in the pleats of the full skirt. It almost looks like a water colour painting what with the subtle yet rich colouring.
Knight is a world renowned fashion photographer having won awards for his work shooting for Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, Calvin Klein, Yohji Yamamoto, Vogue, Dazed & Confused, W Magazine and receiving the prestigious Moet and Chandon Fashion Tribute in 2006. The honour prompted celebrations in the form of a masked ball. The oh-so cool photographer does not restrict himself to the margins of the fashion world, nay, the world is his subject. Publishing work subjecting skinheads to flowers as his muse his books and exhibitions have received spectacular acclaim.
“Photography, like poetry or philosophy, enables you spend a lot of time scrutinizing the little details of life. It becomes a reason to live in a broader way.” – Knight.
Essentially this reasoning is what has drawn me to his work. In an era that unfortunately has rigid views of beauty, reminiscing through Knight’s imagery acts as a welcome escape from the constraints of narrow minds.
In 2002 Knight became the director of a whole new realm of photography. SHOW studio is an arena to present more than the final image. “SHOW stuio is based on the belief that showing the entire creative process – from conception to completion – is beneficial for the artist, the audience and the art itself.” – Knight. SHOW studio contains so much fashion it can be hard to know where to look! I highly recommend exploring this world yourself and discovering what Knight and his team have unearthed for us all from still images to motion pictures.
Nick Knight is an influential photographer that understands the power, importance and morality that comes with creating images of the strength and calibre that he produces.
