keep warm and cool in your winter coat

Welcome autumn, it is official, you’re finally here. So the leaves are falling, along with the temperature and now is the perfect time to start choosing your winter coat that you’ll end up living in by the end of the year. I’ve highlighted five of my favourite styles and picked a runway look, designer option and high-street piece for each.

Runway: Ralph Lauren, Designer: Joseph, Highstreet: Topshop

Country classic – The earthy colour scheme is perfect for an autumnal feel. Excellent tailoring and traditional textures make for a down-town turned Downton inspired look.

Runway: Altuzarra, Designer: McQ by Alexander McQueen, Highstreet: Asos
Parallel parka – Be it over a dress, with jeans and ankle boots or to keep your leather intact, throw on a parka for a preppy edge to your style. Look to Alexa Chung for some serious parka pointers. To stand out from the crown make yours a parka with attitude via patchworks, shearling or leather.

Runway: Mulberry, Designer: Alexander Wang, Highstreet: Adidas
Back to school, Bomber cool – Be it leather, wool-blend or a varsity style, bombers will earn you an A+ on the playground this winter.

Runway: 3.1 Philip Lim, Designer: Rick Owens, Highstreet: Zara
Texture mix – This is for the feminine fashionista wear contrasting sleeves for a modern yet chic overcoat. Leather or metallic, use to compliment your take on the aw12 trends whether it’s the glamorous goth style or the space age mega metallic look that’s taken your fancy.
Runway: Jil Sander, Designer: Stella McCartney, Highstreet: Topshop

Oversized outrage – Go big or go home. This is the inescapable coat of winter. There are two ways to embrace this style. One way is to keep with a darker colour and in a tweedy finish for an androgynous feel, as though you stole your father’s coat. Secondly wearing this large lump o’ love over an evening dress will create an allure of sensual mystery as onlookers ponder what lies beneath.

Now that I've done the hard work for you, just choose what style suits your personality and your existing wardrobe the best and go wrap up warm!
